Lawn Mowers: When to Repair, When to Replace and How to Maintain

Lawn Mowers

Should You Repair or Replace?

Proper care can go a long way, but sometimes the inevitable will happen. Your trusty lawn mower finally starts showing signs of wear. It may be sudden, or it may be a build up. But one day, you’ll have to make a decision.

Ultimately, the answer lies within the length of time you’ve had your mower and the condition of the mower itself. If the mower needs repairing after a couple of years and the expected price to repair is pretty significant, then it’s probably time for an upgrade.

Multiplying the horsepower by 100 will oftentimes give you an accurate prediction of the engine’s lifespan. For example, if your mower is 18 HP, then it’s expected to last around 1,800 hours. This is also good to keep in mind when you are purchasing equipment.

However, if you think your mower is just a simple, inexpensive fix away from properly starting back up, then contact your local Greenway staff to schedule a repair. We have a couple Service inspection specials that will allow you to give your mower the attention it deserves at a great price. These routine inspections help to fix any smaller issues before they turn into bigger, money-eating emergencies.

How to Increase the Longevity of your Mower

When you buy equipment, you expect it to last. Thankfully, there’s a couple of practices we can all do to increase the lifespan of our mowers and squeeze out every last bit of productivity. After all, why not get the full bang for your buck?

  • Invest in value. Before even buying a lawn mower, it’s important to pay attention to the quality of the build. Each John Deere mower is designed to a high standard, guaranteeing a higher life span than many comparable brands. By investing in quality, you will be able to run your mower for a longer period of time, giving a higher return on investment.

  • Winterize your mower. Changing the oil and draining the gas at the end of each season drastically increases your mower’s lifespan. By leaving old oil in the tank, it can corrode the internal components of your engine. Gas can also corrode the carburetor, but draining the gas through siphoning into a gas can is suggested.

  • Replace the air filter. Typically done in the beginning of the season, changing the air filter will help create better conditions for your mower to operate. Contact your local Greenway team or check your operator’s manual to determine how often you should change the air filter.

  • Change the spark plug. By routinely changing out spark plugs, you are able to allow your mower to run more efficiently. Use spark plugs found in our Parts Department (in-store or online) and refer to your manual to determine how often your spark plugs should be replaced. This is a fairly inexpensive solution to your mower’s longevity.

  • Keep it clean. By using a leaf blower to get rid of any dirt or grass stuck in your mower, you can lower the chances of having debris interfering with your operation. Try to do this before mowing each time.

  • Perfect your schedule. By creating a maintenance schedule, you will find consistent practices to stick with. Refer to your mower’s operator’s manual (find them online here) and follow the timetable laid out for your specific machine. No more missed maintenance!
