Here at Greenway Equipment, we deeply value our team and consider every employee to be an important member of the Greenway family. This month, we want to recognize our Precision Ag Field Operations Manager, Jared Field.
Jared has worked with us here at Greenway Equipment for two years, and we feel lucky to have him. Precision Agriculture is an important part of modern agriculture, and as a company, we always want to be able to provide our customers with the best tools to elevate their operations. We are also always committed to educating our customers about upcoming and existing technology, like precision ag.
“The term precision agriculture has been around since the early 1980s and started with variable rate fertilizers and yield mapping in the early 1990s,” Jared said. “We have seen an explosion of new technology over the past 20 years starting with John Deere Autotrac in 2002.”
According to Jared, every farmer in the industry today employs some form of precision ag technology on their farm to help improve productivity.
“This can come in the form of machine guidance and control for product application, in-field technologies such as moisture sensors and irrigation monitors, or the imagery techniques to provide crop health monitoring,” Jared said. “All of these new technologies allow for the grower to create a more positive return on their investment in their farming operation.”
Jared spends a lot of time helping Greenway customers learn how to get the most out of the John Deere technology that we have to offer. He recalls one instance in particular when he helped a farmer develop a system that would save them money and improve their harvest.
“I had a grower in the past who picked up a farm that was entirely pivot irrigated,” he explained. “I let them know that with the John Deere planter and rate controller technology that they currently owned, they could save cost in seed and fertilizer by reducing their inputs in the dryland areas.”
Jared developed a set of seeding prescriptions and fertilizer recommendations for that customer that ultimately maximized the potential of each acre based around their irrigation. “In the end, we were able to maintain a high yield corn crop while cutting input cost,” he said, “all by using existing technology on their farm.”
When Jared isn’t working at Greenway Equipment, he’s probably spending time with his wife of 9 years, Molly, and his two children, Callie (4) and Tucker (1). In their spare time, the whole family enjoys going camping, kayaking, hunting and fishing.
Jared grew up in Jackson, Tennessee and moved to Starkville, Mississippi to attend Mississipi State University. During his time there, he earned a degree in Agricultural Engineering Technology and Business.
Outside of all the work he does with Precision Ag, Jared is very interested in hydroponic fruit and vegetable production. In the past, he has worked in a hydroponic greenhouse and he hopes to have one of his own as a hobby or small business one day.
