This year, Greenway Equipment is joining America’s favorite tractor brand in celebrating 100 years of John Deere tractors. John Deere as a company has single-handedly changed the agriculture and equipment industries forever.
Back in the early 1900s, Deere & Company took a crucial step forward that now marks the beginning of the John Deere tractor legacy. The company acquired the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company and took over production of a tractor called the “Waterloo Boy”. That was the very beginning of a revolution that would rock the agricultural equipment industry to its core.
After a lot of research and testing, the first tractor produced by John Deere came out in 1918. John Deere sold 5,634 Waterloo Boy tractors in the first year alone. The Waterloo Boy wasn’t John Deere’s first rodeo—the company has been around for a total of 181 years—but it certainly secured the brand’s place as America’s favorite tractor.
In fact, before John Deere began tractor production, tractors were not considered to be the invaluable farming tools they are today. Needless to say, the production of the Waterloo Boy was a transformative event.
